It was amazing to hear that Dr. Holick’s vitamin D research was actually condemned and ridiculed for almost 30 years. But now there is so much other research to back up his studies and so many other doctors and scientists have gotten on the vitamin D bandwagon during the past five years. Dr. Holick has gone from the court jester of vitamin D to a world-class genius.
Here are just a few vitamin D facts and then after I post this article I will put out another with more details on vitamin D and how it affects our health.
What’s interesting is vitamin D. is not a vitamin, but it’s a hormone and what makes it so unique is that it’s actually made in the skin, as it’s exposed to sunlight. So that’s all well and good and everybody should have enough vitamin D in their bodies. Right?
Wrong! what we learned is that you only need 15 to 20 minutes of sunlight a day to make vitamin D. What most people don’t know is that you have to get that sunlight during specific times of the day to really be effective.
It says on Dr. Holick’s website that “An analysis of the NHANES III data has demonstrated that neither children nor adults are receiving an adequate amount of vitamin D from their diet or from supplements.”
That was quite an eye-opening statement that I read on his website. did you see where it says. Not getting enough vitamin D from their diet or from supplements.
Many people think that if they’re taking a supplement their vitamin and mineral intake should be fine. As you can see that’s not always the case.
